A Letter to our Brothers and Sisters at CUPE 139/139-01

Good evening Brothers and Sisters,
On Tuesday our employer announced the elimination of 40 unionized positions, 17 of which are CUPE. This misguided decision was made in an attempt to achieve $5.6 million in saving that they claim is caused by excessive overtime and sick leave. We can not understand how eliminating 40 front line positions will in any way reduce sick time or overtime.
As each of you know, healthcare has been in a staffing retention crisis since the end of Covid. A period when you stepped forward, persevered through adversity and demonstrated true professionalism to provide the essential care our patients needed, and this is how our employer is repaying your dedication, by cutting staff and increasing workloads.
CUPE, OCHU and Local 139 is actively fighting these cuts starting with a press conference on Monday October 27, 2025.
We understand the anxiety this announcement has created. In order to give each affected member the dignity they deserve, we can not disclose the specifics until we have the chance to meet with them. We are working to have this completed by Friday October 31, 2025. We ask for your patience and understanding as we advocate to ensure each of your rights under the Collective Agreement are protected.
Your executive is available to provide support, our contact information can be found on our website: https://139.cupe.ca/about-us/your-executive/  and Facebook Page:  Facebook
